What is the difference between lining and coatings?

Linings are materials used to protect a container from corrosion and/or to protect the contents of a container from contamination by the container shell material. They are commonly thick, built-up systems that may or may not contain matting or similar reinforcing material.

Coatings generally refer to materials used for protective and/or functional purposes, while paints refer to materials used for aesthetics or decorative purposes. When coatings are used singly or in combination with reinforcing materials like matting, etc., they are termed as "lining", like for lining the inside of drinking water tanks.

However, there exist many similarities in composition, handling, and the use of paints, coatings and linings. There are also some differences.
