First of all Notre Dame won the 1979 national championship and all the other 6 Alabama claims to have belong to other teams. So in fact I only count 5 NC. Where do you get 12?

Notre Dame has 13 consensus nation titles, although they only claim 11. This is because ND only claims AP championships as national championships. In 1938 and 1953, the majority of the polls named them champions, although AP had them #2.
