When you are planning a trip, there are several different types of airlines that you can choose from. Your ultimate destination will have the largest impact on the type of airline you choose, but there are many flights that have more than one option.

International Flights

Flying internationally provides you with the least number of choices when it comes to airlines. Most countries have a specific airline that serves their customers directly. If you plan to travel to Another Country, you will want to look into the airlines that service that country most often. In general, the smaller the country is, the fewer options you will have as an airline passenger. Look at the route from beginning to end to make sure you understand what types of airplanes you will be flying all the way to your destination. The smallest countries offer tiny planes that ferry you from larger airports to your final destination.

National Airlines

Flying within the United States opens up your options quite a bit. There are several national airline companies to choose from, each with its own distinct style. When you are considering which airline to choose, pay attention to where the hubs are for each company. Most national flights will make at least one stop in an airline’s hub airport to transfer planes. If the hub is an airport you like to travel through, choose that airline for the majority of your travel. The national airlines can be a little more expensive than local airlines, but they usually offer nicer accommodations.

Local Airlines

Flights within a certain region of the country offer you the most flexibility. There are regional airlines that operate out of a select number of airports. These regional airlines offer substantial discounts from the prices that most national companies charge. They can charge less for tickets because they maintain smaller fleets of planes and fly fewer miles across the country. Whenever possible, choose a regional flight option for shorter flights. You will save money on your airfare immediately. Regional airlines also tend to be more friendly and entertaining for passengers because they are not based on such a strict corporate model compared to national airlines.
