What makes literature a recorders of man's imagination?

This is a vague question, but literature by nature includes exhaggerations of the truth and a bending of the possible, as told in Homer's Iliad when an impossible number of ships set sail, and an enormously complex sequence of events is told by an omniscient speaker. But we keep reading it.
