Why is christianity's most important icon a cross?

It was chosen by Christianity because they ought to follow their model who has died on the cross,but was resurrected and glorified.It was clearly told by Saint Paul in (1Corinthian 1:18)-For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
