When did the first men's NCAA basketball tournament take place?

The first NCAA Division Basketball tournament was played in 1939. There were two regions (East and West) and four teams in each region:

East: Brown, Ohio State, Wake Forest, Villanova

West: Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah State

Oregon defeated Ohio State in the finals 46-33.
