'---ol' is the name for the functional group of AlcohOLs.

e.g. Ethanol CH3CH2OH( ethyl alcohol /; The alcohol that humans drink).

Methanol HCH2OH

Propanol CH3CH2CH2OH

Butanol CH3CH2CH2CH2OH

IUPAC formulas are written as ' R - CH2OH '.

etc.,

Do NOT confuse with Aldehydes, which have the suffix ' ---AL'. Only one letter difference.

e.g.

Propanal (CH3CH2CHO)

Butanal. (CH3CH2CH2CHO)
