The Alps in southern Germany are the highest, though the more elevated Alpine high country lies south of Germany across the border into Switzerland and Austria (and even a bit further south into northern Italy). In general, Germany has it highest elevations in the south and the farther north one travels, the more the altitude decreases. The adjacent Swabian Alb and the Franconian Alb also lie in the south of Germany. There are over 30 identifiable mountain ranges in the country, and the list of them can be viewed by using the link to the Wikipedia article.
