The Civil War caused Virginia to split into two separate states over the issue of slavery. When Virginia seceded from the Union in April 1861, the western region, which had a different economic structure and less reliance on slavery, opposed this decision. Consequently, in June 1863, the western part of Virginia was admitted to the Union as the new state of West Virginia. This split highlighted the deep divisions within the state regarding the institution of slavery.
