What purpose do the pyramids serve?

The Egyptian pyramids were originally intended to house and protect the embalmed bodies and funeral goods of important people such as Pharaohs. Now they mainly serve as tourist attractions. There are also New World pyramids which have flat tops, rather than pointed tops as the Egyptian pyramids have, and those were used as platforms for religious rites.
