Seatbelts were first introduced in cars in the early 1950s. The first production car to feature seatbelts as standard equipment was the 1959 Volvo PV544. However, it wasn't until the 1960s and 1970s that seatbelt use became more widespread, thanks to increasing awareness of road safety and legislation mandating their installation.
