Who was the Chargers linebacker who turned hippie?

Back in the late 60's or early 70's a big deal was made of a San Diego Charger Linebacker that went from playing in the NFL to a flower child. His nickname was Chip. Cannot remember his full name. Made the National sports headlines at the time.
