A vascular surgeon handles the mechanical aspects (surgery and many less invasive procedures). They can monitor/ follow the case and help decide when interventions are necessary. If they are seeing a patient to monitor an aneurysm vascular surgeons will often also manage other risk factors by doing things like prescribing some blood pressure and cholesterol medications. If it is clear no interventions are needed the vascular surgeon will usually refer the patient to a non-surgeon medical doctor.

The purely medical management (as in blood pressure control, cholesterol control and decisions about anticoagulants) can usually be handled by a primary care doctor. Sometimes, depending on the primary care doctor a specialist such as a cardiologist or neurologist (if it is in the head) may be consulted.
