Both archaeological evidence and written history show that petroleum was used in ancient times. It was gathered in semisolid form from riverbanks, or taken from tar pits and oil springs. It was used for construction, medicine, and lighting.
Modern use of petroleum dates from its introduction as a replacement for whale oil in lamps in the 1850s. The first oil wells were drilled at about that time.
