Nelson Rockefeller (born July 8, 1908 in Bar Harbor, Maine; died January 26, 1979 in Manhattan, New York) succeeded W. Averill Harriman as the forty-ninth Governor of New York, serving between January 1, 1959 and December 18, 1973, including the whole of 1961.
