How do you replace a starter motor in a 1996 Harley Davidson sportster motorcycle?

Pull the derby cover off the primary, remove the spring and the nut lock it is attached to, release the clutch mechanism, turn the little screw in the middle loose and then take the Allen screws holding the primary on and remove the cover. Then there are the two large allens that hold the starter in. If you use the right Allen wrenches, you might be able to pull them loose without pulling the clutch basket off. Otherwise, pull the clutch hub nut loose and slide the clutch out till you can get at the two Allen bolts. Disconnect the wires and remove thew starter.
