English settlers controlled slaves just as other nationalities did whether they were slave owners or those charged with the management and care of slaves including other slaves. The vast majority of control was verbal or by gesture. The secondary method of control was confinement or restraints (bonds). Corporal punishment or 'flogging' was third and reserved for slaves that were violent or persistently unproductive.
