But there is another possibility - a married woman may be referred to as Ms. (pronounced 'mizz').This appellation evolved during the feminist revolution; it was considered that the titles 'miss' or 'Mrs' revealed information about a woman's marital status,whereas the title 'Mr' conveyed no such information. This was seen as an inequality and to put women at a disadvantage as assupmtions might be made based on her title, such as her sexual availability. At the same time the practise of a woman losing her own surname and assuming her husband's name on marriage was challenged.

Women chose to use the title Ms., followed by either their own or their husband's surname, because Ms. revealed no information about marital status. This was especially important as more women entered the work force and might be discriminated against if married.
