Who owned Texas prior to the us?

Before Texas became part of the United States, it was initially part of the Spanish Empire. Following the Mexican War of Independence, it became part of Mexico in 1821. Texas declared its independence from Mexico in 1836, becoming the Republic of Texas, which existed until it joined the United States in 1845.
