Why is there no letter under the date on your 1889 silver dollar?

Because the mint mark location on Morgan dollars is on the reverse side of the coin, above the DO in DOLLAR. Mint marks didn't appear on the front of $1 coins until 1971.

Possible letters for an 1889 dollar are:

Blank = Philadelphia

O = New Orleans

S = San Francisco

CC = Carson City
