What event triggered the formation of the internet?

Early adopters of home computers wanted a way to share code without either driving the storage medium to their house, or speaking the code over the phone. They devised a way to have the computer "speak" the code in binary over the phone, and the other computer would "listen" to it and write it. This grew to a large scale, and dial-up was born.
