What was Magwitch's goal?

Though of a violent nature, Magwitch is affectionate, loyal, honorable, hardworking, unselfish, brave, and upright. That sounds a little like the Boy Scout's oath, but there are many incidents that will demonstrate each of those characteristics. Generous, honorable, and unselfish: He benefits Pip based solely on the fact that Pip (although terrorized into doing do) provided him with food and drink when he was an escapee. He feels it is a way of paying him back. After his return to England, he doens't want Pip or Herbert to endanger themselves in protecting him. Affectionate: He is very fond of Pip and Herbert and even his daughter (whom he thought later died). Hardworking: When transported to Australia, he earned a fortune by his own hands in the outback. Brave: He risked everything, including his life, to return to see Pip, not for Pip's gratitude, but to see how his 'boy' had become a gentleman. In fact, other than his violence, he's an altogether likeable guy and a good father figure for Pip.
