The length of a lunar month, or the time it takes for the Moon to complete a full cycle of phases, is determined by the time it takes for the Moon to orbit the Earth. On average, a lunar month lasts about 29.5 days. This slight variation accounts for why some lunar months are a bit longer or shorter.
