Why do people call underwear bvd's?

BVD's were a very common manufacturer of underwear for men and boys in the 70's and 80's, so in the same way, people might say " I am going to get a COKE," even though they might be getting a different soda pop, common brand names can often be used in place of the generic Word! Hope this helps
