Who saves Dave from the book a child called it?

You can see Dave develop through the whole book; he starts of as a tiny boy, never been abused or had his freedom taken away from him. And in the end he is ready to do anything to allay the pain of hunger inside of him. He does not fear death… To him, death is the easiest way of solving his problems. Because of the strength that little boy has, he constantly finds these tiny positive things to keep him going.
