One of the key leaders of the Mexican independence movement was Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. A Catholic priest, he issued the famous "Grito de Dolores" on September 16, 1810, which called for the end of Spanish rule in Mexico. His actions sparked a widespread revolt against colonial authorities, marking the beginning of the struggle for independence. Hidalgo's leadership and vision inspired many others to join the movement, ultimately leading to Mexico's independence in 1821.
