In most cases the fluid is changed using the connections to the cooler fins on the front of the vehicle. The quick lube place use a machine that draws out the fluid and then they connect the cooler back up and fill the transmission back up. There are several problems with this approach. You dont get all the fluid out, you dont get to change the filter and there is a magnet in the bottom of the pan for collecting metal shards and it cannot be cleaned. The best indication of wear on the transmission would be to send oil samples to a lab for the detection of wear particles and the changes to the oils properties.

On the other side of the coin, most new vehicles dont recommend changing the Transmission Fluid very often. (100,000) miles. If you dont have the clearance to remove the oil pan and get to the filter, it is best left to the dealer.
