When there is a fork in the road of life how do you know which way to go?

That question has never been answered, and has been asked since Man could form questions and look back at his life, and Life. Not that everything is pure chance, we do have something to do with what happens. It is difficult to tell what. Really good novels about human life and choice are all over the place and in just about every language; knowing why one did what and what one should have done is the essence of an examined life: the problem is dealing with what was done, not what one should have done, or what one would have liked to have done. So? which road?
