Keratin is the protein that makes up hair and nails (fur, claws, etc.). Hydrolysis is lysis (dissolution) via the chemical action of the hydrogen ion (one in a million water molecules will usually be dissociated into the (H2O goes to H [actually H3O "hydronium"] and OH. The hydronium solution is a very mild acid even though we say water is "neutral" this mild acid can dissolve hair and toenail and the resulting yucky stuff is "hydrolysed keratin!
