What happens if the vice president leaves office?

If the office of vice-president becomes vacant, the President nominates a successor who takes office if approved by a majority vote in both houses of Congress.

This provision was added to the U. S. Constitution as part of the 25th Amendment, which was ratified February 10, 1967.
