What happens if you use only one flight in a round trip airline ticket?

if you are using only the first leg of the roundtrip, then there is no problem
if you are intending to use only the second leg of the roundtrip and have not used the first leg, then it will cancel most probably automatically and you will not be entitled to fly and therefore be forced to buy yourself a new one ...
