Is there anything you can do to stop birds from sitting on the side of your roof?

Yes a couple of things you can do. Birds do not like greasy stuff under their feet, some nice big blobs of petroleum jelly or bearing grease would do it. If that's impractical, thin wires, 30/35mm above the surface, stretched between nails or screws in that area is a proven alternative.
