How does Brian keep track of how long he is in the wilderness in Hatchet?

He makes marks in the stone near the door of his shelter for each day and i think he also puts stones in a rock for each day or notches in a tree with his hatctet. I don't know but the first one is 100% sort of confirmed but not for sure. So, how was your day?
