What are the differences between instincts and emotions?

Examples of emotions are love, happiness, sadness, and anger. Instincts are more difficult to explain. It's a reaction, some kind of knowledge, or an urge hardwired into the brain. Animals know what to eat from instinct, how to mate, among other things. It can be argued that instincts are irresistible and therefore humans don't have instincts.
