Who was John Strognofe?

John Strognofe is not a real person and he did not invent the camera. This was posted somewhere online and has become a source of rampant misinformation across the web. As far as can be ascertained, he never existed.

The scientist who performed the work often attributed to him was Johann Zahn (1641-1707).
