Why does cow ruminate?

Cows are ruminates because int he wild they never knew when a predator was going to attack, so they would eat and eat, filling only the first stomach (the rumen), when it was safe they would then lay down (or rest), and regurgitate all of the food in the first stomach and put it in the remaining three. This process would continue until all of the food is digested as well as the nutrients.
