What did Pioneer 10 investigate?

Pioneer 10 was launched on March 2, 1972 to study Jupiter, some of its large moons and interstellar space. The spacecraft is believed to still be operational, but communication was lost in 2003. Both Pioneer 10 and 11 have a gold anodised plaque attached that should give alien lifeforms some information about the human race should they find it.
