What did the atecs do to increase the acreage of land they could use for farming?

The Aztecs constructed chinampas, artificial islands made of mud and vegetation, in order to increase the amount of arable land available for farming. They built these islands in the shallow waters of Lake Texcoco, which allowed them to expand their agricultural production in a resource-limited environment.
