The Pin oak (Quercus palustris) is widely used for landscaping as an ornamental or shade tree, as it is comparitively easy to transplant and grows more quickly than most oaks. Often found in the cultivated gardens of the UK, the Pin oak has earned the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. Marketed as red oak for general construction and firewood, it is a hard and heavy material. Various Native American tribes utilized the bark, to be used as a drink, for the treatment of intestinal pain. Historically, this hardwood has been used as wooden pins in building construction. Pin oak acorns are an important food source for wood ducks and mallards.
