Why causes lubricating oil consumption increased at a car lot?

Could be several things including simple items such as a loose filter or drain plug. There are also several places oil could leak at an appreciable rate, enough to consider it oil consumption, most notably around the valve cover gasket or breather. Internally, bad valve seals and worn piston rings are the cause of oil consumption.
