The Chilean miners were trapped approximately 700 meters (about 2,300 feet) underground in the San José copper-gold mine. They were confined in a small, dark chamber after a cave-in occurred on August 5, 2010. It took 69 days for rescuers to reach them and bring them to the surface safely.
