If a caterpillar has been in its cocoon for more than a week could it be dead?

Well the cocoon should start to turn a black, dark green, dark red or dark dark brown. So that's how you know if it is dead. If your not sure if it is dead try to touch it gently if it's tale (bottom area) moves its alive. That's all I can give you.
