Can you turn off your air bag yourself?

The Driver's side airbag can not be "turned off" on any vehicle without altering the wiring of the vehicle (not recommended). It is illegal in the United States (and most countries) to alter an Air Bag on a vehicle that you do not own. The passenger side airbag can be turned off on some vehicles (usually pickup trucks) to allow for the use of an infant car seat. Most newer vehicles have weight sensors on the passenger side air bag that automatically disable the air bag when the detected weight is under a certain threshold.
