During the McCarthy hearings, the people who were most likely targeted were those in the entertainment business. McCarthy used several criteria to get them blacklisted. These included those who were viewed as sympathetic or had ever been a member of the American Communist Party, or being a member of progressive groups that the McCarthy panel viewed as pro-Communist. The victims were barred from getting any work, and saw once great careers ruined based on false accusations.
