Traditional Vampire myths and fiction (such as Anne Rice), portray Vampires as "creatures of the night", which is a reference to the "darkness" or "evil" from which they are supposed to have originated from. The original concept of their darkness-bound existence is linked to the attribution of the sun and sunlight to a god or gods, or put more simply the fight between light and darkness.

More recently, liberties have been taken with these myths and authors and script writers have begun changing the traditional image of the vampire to their own ends. An example would be making vampires more "human" by making human morals a part of the vampire's being. An example of this is the recent teen drama "Twilight", which allows vampires to walk around in daylight, or HBO's "True Blood", which assigns calmer "emotions" and sympathy for humans to the vampire Bill.
