He started as a writer for College magazine in college, he joined the Imperial Police in India, he was a part time dishwasher when he struggled to find a job after leaving India, he became an official author, he was a producer for BBC, became a political commentator (which he hated), he joined the Independent Labour Party, and a socialist militia in the Spanish Civil War, and he wrote for socialist newspapers.
