Wills aren't recorded in public records the way civil court case records or property records are. A will is usually drafted by an attorney, signed by the decedent (your mama) and also signed by however many witnesses are required to make the document legal and binding in your state. Once the will is signed, the original is given to the decedent (your mama) to do with what she wants. So, the only way to find out if she had a will is to 1. Ask her attorney (if you know who that is). 2. Search your mama's house for either an original or a copy of the will. 3. If you're aware that she has a safe deposit box that might contain the will, file an emergency petition with the court in your jurisdiction to gain access to the safe deposit box. This last option will require a lawyer. However, it's not a complicated process. Just make sure that you trust the lawyer and find out up front what his or her fees will be to do it.
