The first .30 caliber cartridge was the .30-40 Krag, developed in 1892 for the Krag-Jørgensen rifle used by the U.S. military. It was designed to replace the .45-70 cartridge and featured a spitzer bullet for improved aerodynamics and range. The .30-40 Krag laid the groundwork for subsequent .30 caliber cartridges, including the more famous .30-06 Springfield.
