How do archaeologists obtain information about the past?

They examine artifacts to gather clues (some old weapon ancient civilizations used to use, bones etc.) and come to conclusions with those clues, like a detective For example: if they found a bone with a dent like a straight line in it then whoever or whatever the bone belonged to had been starved one time or the other in their past
