The Black Codes were abrogated by the North after the elections of 1866. Their main intent was a new form of slavery, one that used labor laws to institutionalize legal bondage, subservient roles, and white dominance. Many of the later Jim Crow laws did so in a more devious fashion by establishing a separate and inferior status for blacks.
